Greg, I agree for the most part. I think another element is ensuring that if an ingredient gets added that sours others, it be removed as quickly as possible. To quote other management gurus (can't pull their names out of my brain right now) 'Great companies hire slowly and fire fast.' One shouldn't wait until review time to get rid of those who are making the recipe less than what it could be.

Amen to that! It's baffling to me how people can look at something like the proportions of the human body or the design of a leaf and think it's random.
Very awesome post, but I wish you elaborated more on things like the Golden Ratio, or the geometry of atoms and molecules. Designers don't always realize just how much of their inspiration comes from nature. Great job! =)

Thanks Steve.
As far as where technology's going to be in 10 years I don't really know yet. But if one goes with the Japanese school girl theory, whatever they're doing now will be the big thing in about 5 years.

Meanwhile I'm waiting for my hovercar that was promised 20 years ago...

Seriously though, I think it will become mainstream in the next 6 to 8 years for people to not need any cash or credit cards on them. All of that information will be accessible via our mobile handheld devices, and as we buy stuff in the store and go to check out, the register will handshake with your mobile device, access your bank info, draw the amount from your account via debit, or you can tell it to charge via credit card account. Afterwards your receipt is both stored on your device as well as emailed to you (Apple emails receipts now).
If you lose your device and someone else tries to access your data, it automatically wipes any information it has stored within minutes since each one is paired to its owner using some form of biometrics built into the case.

At least that's how I see it. Hmmm. Maybe that should be in my next blog post.

Yes, I understand the importance of keeping in touch with people on my network. I do email them, call once in a while and so on. That mainly happens with people I've known and worked with in the past. However, the newer people on my network, i.e. the one's I want to know in order to expand my territory, and or the one's at companies I really want to work for and coincidentally are hiring, have proven so far to be a complete shot in the dark, even though they accepted my invite to join my network on LinkedIn. If they don't respond to emails or even phone calls I have left, then the theory of doing it the old fashioned way, e.g. interaction, is pretty much null. Unfortunately, the people I have worked with and do interact with (you are one of them) don't have an in to these other companies I am attempting to get into. I want to get to know the people in my network and similarly have them get to know me because I think that would be mutually beneficial to both parties. But if they don't want to interact beyond "joining my network", then what?
Got any better ideas?

I have discovered that rarely does the World come to one's door. To have an effective network, one must engage their network on a regular basis.

I have recently increased my efforts in this area by identifying a specific set of contacts (about 70) that I want to be part of my business network. My goal is to enhance my personal relationships with these contacts by getting to know them better and having them getting to know me better.

Is this easy? No, It's a lot of work.

This is how I'm doing it:
- phone calls
- e-mail messages
- personal meetings, e.g. coffee, lunch
- meeting at events, e.g. SD Business Journal CEO event

I use LinkedIn only as a tool to see what people are up to, and to increase my web presence.

Maintaining a lively network is important, and it's done the old fashioned way; interaction.
